Garbage Problem in Goa
In the last 5-6 years the amount of garbage generated on a daily basis has increased almost twofold. According to the Goa State Pollution Control Board, about 400 tonnes of waste is generated on a daily basis and 50% of it is non biodegradable plastic which does not get decomposed or get mixed in the soil.

The major cause for this garbage problem is the use of plastic. Plastic waste can cause environmental problems like soil pollution, contamination of water, land degradation and it can also affect marine life especially the plastic waste which is dumped into water bodies.

In order to tackle this problem, people should try their best to reuse plastic items as much as they can and they should also try to reduce their dependence on plastic. People should often prefer biodegradable substitutes such as paper and jute bags instead of plastic bags. If the people take it seriously and try to reduce their dependence on plastic then almost more than half of the garbage problem will be solved. But to make this happen the people will have to take the initiative and lead by example.

The people doing their bit won't be enough to solve this huge problem. The Government of Goa will also have to step up and ensure that garbage bins are provided in populated areas or areas where a lot of people come and go such as beaches,forts,cities and tourist spots.

Another cause for this garbage problem is the shortage of garbage treatment plants. In Goa there are hardly very few garbage treatment plants hence all the garbage produced throughout the state cannot be recycled and treated.

In order to solve this problem, the Government should take the initiative and build more garbage treatment plants so that the garbage created can be properly recycled and then reused.

Though all these solutions might seem easy but they are actually not. But they are not impossible also. If we the people and the government join hands together and actually take this as a challenge then we might save our state from this filthy problem and ensure that our future generations can live their lives in a clean and healthy Goa.
